HOW AND WHY?

In 1988, several BBC staff in Cardiff left the Corporation to set up independent broadcast facilities. One of their number, Geoff Atkins, had enjoyed 20 years’ studio and OB sound experience, latterly specialising in large-scale classical music productions. His first task in the new job was to devise a means of originating high-quality sound for major programmes on location… a brief which led to partnership with a local recording company and the rebuilding of their control vehicle to meet broadcast criteria.

In this new incarnation, The Black Mountain Mobile soon proved well ahead of its time...

The BBC’s long history of servicing programmes in-house meant that, until recently, there was virtually no market for independent sound broadcast vehicles. Units that did exist were generally large “mobile recording studios”, with emphasis placed firmly upon multitracking and less consideration given to the many other features known to be essential for broadcasting.
For this reason, we believe The Black Mountain Mobile stands alone in its field. Multitrack recording is certainly available, but the facilities and general working environment are particularly suited to the immediacy of live mixing. Geoff Atkins has incorporated not only the best aspects of BBC philosophy but also many features inspired by experiences in the World outside. Staff with a Corporation background quickly feel at home in our vehicle, but they also appreciate its host of useful extras… and its unusually spacious and comfortable atmosphere.

Choosing the wrong independent facility can prove inconvenient, irksome and costly. Ask any broadcaster who’s made that mistake! Our vehicle is unashamedly designed to provide optimum facilities in a very specialised corner of the market… backed-up by people with unrivalled experience in engineering and programme operations. We’re delighted to offer this imaginative, flexible and highly cost-effective resource for sound broadcasting “on the road”.
